I am continually fascinated by the discovery process
using my mediums which include primarily metal, vitreous enamel,
glass and stone. I enjoy the challenge associated with finding
unique combinations of these mediums and learning to better control
my mediums.
I am driven by traditional mediums in order to
provide a visual experience in which spontaneous colors, textures,
and forms hopefully play together in a unique way. It is
interesting to note that enameling on metal is an art which has
been practiced since the 6th Century BC (Greece), and
that pewter industry practices were historically so regulated that
violation of formal procedures could result in being jailed. I
enjoy the challenge of rebelling against the old… I mean discovering
new abstract applications of these very traditional mediums.
My techniques include kiln firing, torch firing,
fusing, acid baths, hand thrown and sifted enamel, wet enamel
painting, folding, hammering, and grinding, chiseling; all of which
can result in rather exciting and sometimes serendipitous results.
Mediums include copper, stone, pewter, silver, gold, tin, glass, and
layered transparent vitreous (glass) enamel (which can yield deep
opalescent effects over metal).
